God's Amazing Grace
Written by Bob Williams
Introduction
The Greek word charis {khar'-ece} is most often translated as grace or favor and is found approximately 156 times in the NT. This definition is given by Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon: "That which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm, loveliness: grace of speech; good will, loving-kindness, favor; of the merciful kindness by which God, exerting his holy influence upon souls, turns them to Christ, keeps, strengthens, increases them in Christian faith, knowledge, affection, and kindles them to the exercise of the Christian virtues."
The word grace has to do with that which is wonderful and beautiful. Charis actually comes from the root word chairo {khah'-ee-ro} which is found another 77 times. It means to be glad and to rejoice exceedingly. Philippians 4:4 says, "Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say rejoice." Surely as Christians we have a lot to rejoice about, because God has given us His grace, and that is surely a most wonderful thing! In fact, that is how I would define grace: God doing a wonderful thing. 1 John 3:1 says, "Behold, what manner of love..." John is saying, stand up and notice: God is doing a wonderful thing! And that is what grace is all about.
Grace is God's love
John 3:16-17: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through Him."
